Your words have the power to tear down or to build up. There’s weight to our words. I remember hearing a teacher once tell me that I would never amount to anything in my life. Those words haunted me for years. I can’t imagine she measured the weight those words would have on a young person like me. If she did, she probably would have chosen to keep those words to herself. Every day, we are presented opportunities to use our words to impact people, either for their betterment or for their detriment. As for me, I choose to be a people builder, using my words as the tool to raise them up, strengthen them, believe in them, and champion them. When we bought this house in 2021, we prayed, “God, let this be a place of love and peace for everyone who walks through these doors”. And tonight, we open these doors for a small group study that I’m doing from March - May called, Doing Business God’s Way. I expect people to be loved, cause that’s what happens here. I expect people to be nurtured, cause that’s what happens here. I expect people to be valued and accepted, cause that’s what happens here. And I expect chains to be broken, minds and hearts to be transformed, and breakthroughs to occur, cause that’s what happens here. Not because of me, but because we gave this house (and our gifts, knowledge and talents) back to God when He gave them to us. Thank you God for entrusting me with the things, resources and people you’ve brought into my life. They are yours. Teach me how to manage and care for them well.
I was running some errands with Josie today and I happened to run into someone who played a pivotal role in my childhood. Danny has been a friend of the family for over 40 years. We met at the church I grew up in, and he always made time to encourage me and nurture the gifts that he saw in me even when I was young. Back then, he had a mullet, sang and played the guitar, and had a magnetic personality. To a 5 year old me, he was basically a celebrity. But one of the qualities I distinctly remember was that he made time for, and valued, everyone he came in contact with. Though I was a child, he respected me enough to pour wisdom, advice and encouragement into me well into my early teens while I was still at the church. He was like family, a good friend, and a mentor before I knew what a mentor was. Time came and went and we didn’t stay in contact, but we remained connected, even through his relationship with my mom. Facebook also kept us hovering in each other’s life. A lot of life has happened on both sides in 40 years, but when we saw each other today, seemingly by chance, it was as if no time had passed. There was a joy of seeing a long lost friend. Danny, I appreciate you being in my corner all those years. I appreciate you showing me God through the way you lived (and continue to live) I appreciate you not casting me aside when I was just a bratty little kid, but you took the time to teach me, patiently instructing me to become more than I thought I could be. You never knew what I was navigating through those years, but your friendship helped me through it. And now, at nearly 45 years old, having the honor and privilege of serving people and helping them see themselves as God sees them, I want you to know that you sowed a seed in those early years that is now producing a harvest around the world. All because you saw something special in a hopeful little boy and walked alongside me so I could understand how it could be used by God. Thank you my dear friend.
